HASTINGS REQUIREMENTS.

By Telegraph—Preas Association HASTINGS, May 17. The Hon. R. McKenzie, Minister of Public Works, received a deputation to day comprising the Borough Council, Chamber of Commerce and Farmers' Union, urging that, attention should be given ti maters of the district. In the course of his reply the Minister stated that the Government did not intend to build elaborate railway stations and post offices while the people in the backblocks had to slush through mud and had no railways or conveyances at all. He approved of the policy of closer settlement for Hawke's Bay, but the price of land had to be considered.
