RAILWAY TRAFFIC.
Details of the working of the New Zealand railways for the year ended 31st March last are gazetted. I The expenditure was 70.19 percent., of the revenue in the North Island, and 74.05 in the South Island. The largest expenditure per mile was £1,012 on the North Island main lines and branches, and the largest revenue per mile was £3,305 on the Westport branch. The passengers carried numbered 10,457,144, an increase of 700,428; parcels, 61,293, an increase of 23,728; sheep, 5,211,489, an increase of 618,389; cattle,' 145,275, an increase of 10,891; pigs, 117,626, a decrease of 8,361"; timber, 582,859 tons, a decrease of 34,032 tons; grain, 793,793 tons, an increase of 27,676 tons; wool, 137,916 tons, an increase of 17,323 tons, merchandise, 729,970 tons, a decrease of 27,676 tons; minerals, 2,342,048 tons, an increase of 22,135 tons.
