This district is is still keeping up its reputation as a dairying centre, and on Saturday next, 15th inst, about £3,700 will be distributed among the suppliers of the Ballance Co-operative Dairy Company for milk supplied during the month of April. The averasya test for last month was 4.42, which must be considered exceedingly good for the large amount of milk supplied. All the creameries "are running every other day, and the two butter factories will shortly do likewise, • Mr E. Tutloch met with an accident whilst trucking cattle at the Pahiatua Station, this morning. Which necessitated Dr. Dawson putting in a few stitches in his head. The matter of the. water and drainage in Pahiatua caused considerable discussion at the recent general election of Mayor and Councillors. At the meeting of the Borough Council the Overseer (Mr Parker), who has been in charge of the sewerage works which were initiated some three years ago by Mr Laing-Meason, reported that a careful inspection had been made of all pipe lines, the man holes had been uncovered and the sewers looked into and everything was in good working order. Flushing operations had been carried out at the terminus of each pipe to ascertain if the mains were in any way defective, and after a thorough test he could find no fault with them. The two septic tanks were also subjected to a good overhauling, and were in good working order. The Overseer also submitted a plan of the proposed drain line to the new school, showing the amount -of work to ba done, and giving an approximate estimate of the cost. Miss Armitage, a very old resident of this town, was taken seriously ill at Auckland the other day, and her condition is such as to cause her relatives considerable anxiety. The bachelors' ball at Kaitawa, last evening, was a decided success and was attended by visitors from all the surrounding districts, including a drag load from Pahiatua. The floor was in perfect order, and good music was supplied by Bluett's String Band, extras being played by the Misses Ross, and Messrs C. Hicks and McKay, the latter also playing some bagpipe selections. The secretarial work was ably carried out by Messrs' D. Ross and J. Burgess conjointly.
BALLANCE NOTES. A meeting of milk suppliers* was held at the Ballance Factory, the other morning to thresh out the question of butter versus cheese. The meeting-was not a fully representative one, and those present conisdered that there was not sufficient difference in the price of the 'two articles to warrant the expenditure of a duplicate plant being erected. The timber for the four bridges is on the ground, but the work is not being proceeded with, the contractor being called away to do urgent work at McFarlane's bridge. At the School Committee meeting, Mr A. Sinclair was appointed secretary, and it was decided to pay the secretary a bonus of 2J per cant, on all money that passed through his hands.
