THE MEAT TRADE.
ALLEGED COMBINE. United Press Association—By Electric Telegnpb Copyright. Received May 13, y.45 p.m. LONDON, May 13. Lord Robert Cecil's Committee appointed to consider the combinations in the meat trade reports that the combination is composed of the Hammond, Armour, Swift and Morris Companies. There is no serious danger at present, but it would appear that they are endeavouring to acquire controllinginterests in the Argentine. There has also been inquiries on the part of United States firms in Australia and New Zealand. Estancieros im the Argentine are opposing the United States invasion, fearing that the price of their cattle will be affected in the absence of competitive buying. The combination, thought unlikely to arise in the near future, if it succeeds, may exercise a determining influence on beef prices at the Smithfield Market, and largely affect prices in Britain. The evidence that United States firms control the Canadian live cattle trade is too vague to allow of a definite opinion being formed.
