MASTERTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The first meeting of the newly elected School Committee was held last evening, at thj Tenfle Chambers, when ..the following members were p'resent:—Messrs A. Hendry, A. Chapman, J. T. Thompson, C. Perry, G. Townsend, J. Carpenter, and An apology was received from Mr Waddington. Mr C. Perry was voted to the chair.

The treasu?*er reported the receipt of capitation £27, special Government grant £3l 7s, Trust Lane's grant£3l 17s, and Government subsidy £3l lis 7d, and a credit balance at date of £139 12s Ad, a large part of which, as indicated in the annual report, is "earmarked' for asphalting in the playground and school gardens. Accounts amounting to £22 3s 7d were passed for payment. The visiting members reported having ordered the repairs that were required, and other repairs the need for which had arisen since last meeting. With reference to the swings, the Headamster was adverse of their removal, and while still to opinion that there is an element of danger, he was not prepared to advise their immediate removal. After discussion, it wa3 decided to request the visiting members to see if the danger from the swings can be minimised. Messrs G. Townsend. J. T. Thompson, and E. H.'Waddington were appointed the visiting members for the month.

The Headmaster reported inter alia:—Attendance.— Main School: Roll 621, average attendance 558, percentage of attendance 90. Side School: 159, 150, 94. Secondary Classes: 88, 81, 92. The attendance during the three school days of Easter week is usually below the average. This was again the case this year. A number of parents take their children away for the week, and this of course affects the attendance. In spite of this, however, a good record of attendance has been made for. the, month. The Side School attendance has been excellent, and indicates the almost, total absence of EicUnc-ss. The Truant Officer recently took proceedings in one or two cases, and he is again visiting the school for the same pu*>pose in a I fortnight's time.
