TURF NOTES. (By "Zetland'). Gold Lace is now to be trained by J. W. Lowe, at Trentham. This trainer has recently put Sir Frisco into work again. Being especially capable in heavy going, the son of San Francisco should increase his winning score during the winter season. Bridge, winner ef the Maiden Hack Race at the Hawke's Bay meeting, is a full brother to Grand Slam. He is owned by Mr E. J. Watt, and gives promise of being a good handicap horse. The steeplechasing season may be said to commence in earnest this month with the Wanganui winter meeting. Judging by the list of nominations it would appear that some very fine performers will be seen out over country during the
winter. With such horses as Kaitere, Eurus, Audax, Maidi, Capitol, Le I Beau, Lull, Pawa, Nogi, Paritutu, Master Douglas, Exmoor, Kairoma, Lyrist, Hipporofla, North Head, Auratus, Corazon, and Prospector, for steeple and hurdle events, soma very fine contests should eventuate, and it is certain that a widespread interest in the winter sport will soon be evinced.
Lebeccio has gone into H. Rickey's stable at Hastings, and will be a competitor over the sticks at the Wanganui meeting. A. Shearsby, who for some years has been private trainer to "Mr Highden," has resigned, and will revert to training for the public. His position will probably be taken up by the well-known horseman. George Price. Australian racing in the spring of this year will be invested with greater interest than usual for tha sportsmen of this Dominion. If all goes well Mr W. E. Bidwill will be represented on the other side by Gravitation, Provocation, and Tribulation., Mr T. H. Lowry, of Hawke's Bay, will send over Downfall, Bobrikoff, and Chanteuse. Artillerie and Wharekura will carry the colours of Messrs Whitworth Bros., of Wellington; and the trustees of the late Mrs Coombes, Auckland, contemplate sending the well performed Master Soult and Alysian. The Wellington sportsman, Mr M. Melrose, may race two or three two-year-olds, and if California keeps sound he is another likely New Zealander to do battle with the Australians. It is also on the cards that the Masterton owner-trainer, Mr M. McGrath, may consider it worth while to send over a trio, including Tumut and Osiris. Taken altogether, it is quite likely that within three or four months quite a large number of New Zealand horses will be among the fields at Kandwick and Flemin^ton.
