PROVOCATION THE BRILLIANT. 1 That Provocation is entitled to all the enthusiastic encomiums passed upon his prowess he gave further proof on Thursday last at Hastings, when he romped home in front of his opponents for the Hawke's Bay ' Stakes, in which event he was called upon to carry the mamimum penalty of 181b. With Provocation's success- ' ful assault on Hastings last week we ! may assume that the bay son of I Birkenhead and Stepfeldt has run his last race as a two-year-old. The i ■ <i ; statement of Provocation's exploits 1 as a youngster is a highly interesting I document; and with six wins out of jlO starts down against his name, it ' can be stoutly argued that he has put 'up a record entitling him to a place ' with the best colts of his age that j have graced the New Zealand turf. The following is a full statement of Provocation's performances: —Second in Hastings Stakes, four furlongs, Bst 51b, won by Elysian, Bst 121b. Won Wellesley Stakes, four furlongs, Bst 71b.
