CASTLEPOINT COUNTY.
The ordinary meeting of the Castlepoint County Council was held on Saturday, May Ist, ail the members being present A letter was received from Mr Mcßae on the damage done to his road from the gate to the river by the metal carts, and requesting that the road should be re-metalled. Messrs Seaton and Sladden applied for an inspection and certificate for the first mile of the lea road. The Council declined, pending a bridge being erected over the Whareaina river to connect the said road with the road leading to the UritoLangdale road. Messrs Brandon, Hislop and Johnston also wrote requesting the Council to have an inspection made of the road and a certificate given of satisfaction. The Council decided to obtain the opinion of the County solicitor on the matter. Messrs Gawith and Logan wrote re Mrs Cox's section in the township being taken under the Public Works Act, and advising the mode of procedure. The Masterton Town Cleric wrote in reference to the subject of a conference to consider the question of forming the Wairarapa into a Charitable Aid district apart from Wellington.—The Chairman was appointed to attend as a delegate at the conference. The County Clerk of the Masterton County advised that his Council had decided to object to a sum of £I,BOO being including in the Estimate of Expenditure of the Wellington and Wairarapa United District Charitable Aid Board, for the maintenance of the Victoria Hospital for Incurables and applying for cooperation of this council.—The request was agreed to. The Weber County Clerk forwarded a copy of resolutions in respect to proposed amendment in the Public Works Act to allow of Local Bodies taking timber to burn papa for road metal, and asking the Castlepoint council to co-operate.— It was decided not to support the proposal. The Registrar-General forwarded forms to be filled in of the receipts and expenditure of the Council for the year ending 31st March, 3909. Mr A. Tuckett applied for the position of Pouudkeeper to the Cuuncil, and it was decided to remove Mr Sullivan as he had left the district, and appoint Mr Tuckett Poundkeeper in his place.
I The roadmen forwarded a request fo be allowed to commence work at 7.30 a.m in place of 8 a.m. and to get a half day off on Saturday, but the Council declined to allow this alteration as they would only get three hours work for half a days' pay, Cr Langdon dissenting. It was decided to take the necessary steps to increase the number of ridings within the County from three to four, and that the members of the Council with the exception of Cr". Ryder meet on Saturday 15th May to consider the alteration of boundaries. It was agreed to hold a special meeting of the Council on the 29th inst. to adopt a resolution by way of Special Order making a special rate to meet interest an other charges on a ban of £250 for a bridge over the Taueru Rives on the Alfredton-Tenui road, and to make a special rate to meet interest and other charges loan of £BO, being 10 per cent on the loan|of £BOO for the WhakatakiCastlepoint Road. The Clerk was directed to make inquiries from the treasury if the loan for the Whakataki Valley road was available, as the work was now well in hand. It was decided to enforce the Wheel Tyres By-law on the after Ist May. Mr Bario:i was appointed to supervise the work of formation on the Wh&kataki Valley roai It was agreed to withhold payment of the first quarterly eontrikuuon to the Wellington and Y7;iirarapa Charitable Aid Dua-d pending the enquiry by the Minisier as to the correctness of including tha cost cf maintenance of the Victoria Home for Incurables in the estimates for the current year. The Treasurer reported a credit balance of £643 19s 4d. Accounts were passed for payment amounting to £256 17s 3-.:. The road overseer was directed to get some, groynes fixed above and "'below jheHangman's Bridge in Mangapaieha.
