Messrs Sturton and Co , of Pahiatua, have in stock in their ironmongery depnrment a large range of breech-loading- guns, specially imported for the, shooting] season. The guns are fiom the factories of the leading English makers, and are being retailed at very reasonable prices. A large order of ammunition has also been opened up, and includes all the leading brands. Farmers will fce interested in the display of Yates' farm and garden seeds. The exhibit is a particularly comprehensive one, which farmers and others should make a point of inspecting. The Rev. S. G. Compton, who has been in charge of St. Mark's Church, Mangatainoka for some time, prsached tor the last time on Sunday last, at St. Mark's. Rev. Compton has been appointed to the Levin charge. Mrs Kinzett. who has been a resident of Konini for several years, is to be tendered a farewell social in the Konini Hall, this afternoon, by the ladies of that district prior to her leaving for Wn;v a in. Several residents of Ngaturi intend to erect a private telephone to their residences and permission was granted them by the'Pahiatua County Council on Saturday last to erect a private line along the roadside. The matter of drainage in the country is not often trono seriously into by the majority of settlers, and in his report to the County Council on Saturday Inpsector Hicks expressed a hope that the Council would frame a by-law for countiy drainage work as such a bye-law would be of material advantage in protecting private individuals against unskilled workmen. A meeting of the Marima Hall Committee " waa held on Saturday evening. The report and balance sheet for the year was very satisfactory, and the Committee have the sum of eight pounds in hand.
Additional entries of both sheep and cattle have been made for the local stock sales held in the Mangahao road yards tomorrrow (Tuesday). At the last meeting of the Cuunty Council, a gncd deal of discussion ensued in 'reference to the damage that has been done by recent flooda in the Marima district. It was pointed out that unless substantial protective works were put in in the vicin'ty of the Marima bridge, there was an immediate probability of that structure beirg rendered useless through the river changing its course into another channel. Cr Bolton, speaking upon the question, said that the position of affairs should be laid before the Minister of Roads and Bridges at once, especially as it was in his own constituency, and affected tha interests of a large number of settlers in that locality. Mr Baggeley, whose property is threatened by the encroachment of the river, attended the meeting,'and stated that he was prepared to give monetary assistance provided the protective works were substantially erected and made effective.
A meeting of the Bush Rugby Union was held at Hamua last evening, and it was decided to start the Banner matches on Saturday next. The motions to remove the< headquarters of the T.l.nion to Pahiatua and to Hukanm respectivley, were lost, and Mr White-Scott tabled a motion that the headquarters of the Union be at Pahiatua, the annual meeting to be held at Pahiatua and the ordinary meetings to be held at the most convenient places the same to be conducted by a management committee appointed by the Union. All ordinary meetings are at prsenet held at Hamua, which is sometimes very inconvenient for delegates to attend, and if Mr WhiteScott's motion is carried at the next meeting it will probably help the situation. The following team will represent in their match t against the Foresters on Wednesday next:— Hill, Swiggs, Bentley, Connor, Heberley, Quinlan, W. Yule, F. Futcher, Meade, McKenzie, F. Zillwood, Hall (2), Beaufort, u. Stone. Emergencies— W. Smeaton, Wade, Morris, Jacques, Mcßae. The Foresters' team will be picked irom twenty-six players, some of whom are good footballers.
