WASTE OF RAILWAYS.
Oar opinion lias always been that, considering the character of the country through which it passes, and the prospects of settlement there, the expenditure on the Otago Central is so much waste money; and we trust, says the Auckland "Star," that Sir Joseph, having duly warned the people of Otago what to expect, will act upon the principle he has laid down. If the people of Otago believe so firmly in the future of these railways, let them do their own financing, as—much (o their credit —they have done in the case of the Gora-Waikaka line. But, considering all the claims upon the Publ'c Works Funds from other eourcFs, they can hardly expect fiie
State to invest more public money in enterprises that promise nothing for many years to come bat a heavy and increasing loss.
