PAHIATUA NEWS.

(From Our Resident Reporter). Thursday. The roads in the districts around Pahiatua are in first-class order at present. The Tiraumea river has cut into the Kohunui road at one place, and men are now engaged putting in protective works there. CO-OPERATIVE FREEZING COMPANY. A meeting of the Directors of the Farmers' Co-operative .Freezing Company was held at the Commercial Hotel to-day, Mr J. C. Cooper presiding. A committee consisting of Messrs Cooper, T. Quirk, Lomax, and T. Hodgins was appointed to carry on detail work until the flotation of the company. Capital amounting to ten thousand puunds is now in sight. Six thousand has already been guaranteed, the sums ranging from £2OO to £SOO. The same committee will revise the articles of the association. The prospectus was adopted, on the motion ot Mr Balsillie, of Pal- . merston North, who commended the chairman on the excellent manner in ... which it had been drawn up. Mr Corrigan, of Nelscn, received a hearty vote of thanks for the valuable assistance he had rendered in the organising work. The directors urged him to continue the work he *" had began so excellently. Messrs Quirk and Hodgins were jaflded to the directorate, in place of Messrs R. McKenzie, of Kopuaranga. and Robinson, ofPongaroa.

At the Borough Council Chambers .last evening Mr D. Crewe was installed as Mayor. The following Committees were elected: —Works: Crs McCardle, Boyd. Hewat and jDrew. Finance: The Mayor ? Crs Westiake, Norrell and Sturton. Library: Crs Hare, Drew, Davidson. **For Water and Drainage the whole Council were elected. Mr J. A. Walsh is in receipt of a letter from Mr W. Dunning from Sydney, in which that gentleman stated he is having a splendid trip so Jar. He also mentioned that he had met Mr James, S.M., of Masterton, who is on a holiday for the benefit of Jiis health. Mr James has, states Mr jDunuing, wonderfully improved in iealth, and is feeling much benefited by his trip. This will be good news to Mr James' many friends in Masterton.

The following team will represent Pahiatua against Mangatinoka on Saturday next on the local ground: — Messrs Bluett, Eccieton, Heberley, Yule, Mexted, Short, Morrison, Singleton, Hall, Weatherley, Jolly, Smith, Geurin, Bell and Shaw. Emergency, Collins. Playera are requested to be on the ground at 3 sharp. rMr J. C. Cooper Is the only nominee for the position of President of the Pahiatua-Akitio A. and P. Association, and Mr G. C. Miller for the position of Auditor, and Mr G. A. Burgess for Treasurer, while the following haVe been nominated for the Committee, 12 of whom are required: —J. H. Richardson, J. Manson, W. D. Irving. Thef meeting for the election of the above Committee will be held on May 18th.

WOODVILLE NOTES. The first Cup matches in connection with the Dannevirke sub-union were played yesterday. On the local ground the Woodville Seniors met and defeated Dannevirke by 17 to nil. Tries were scored for the home team by Monteitn (2), Giles, Smith snd Herilhy, only one being converted. The forwards on both sides were evenly matched, but the local backs showed superior ®ombination to the visitors, and indulged in some pretty passing play. Mr Porteous was referee. Excelsior Seniors defeated Aotea by 8 points to nil, and in the Junior competition Dannevirke and Excelsiors drew, aa also did Wood-

ville and Dannevirke High School, each team scoring three points. Woodville Thirds and Cadets also drew. The annual tea meeting in connection with the Methodist Church anniversary was held last evening, and was very successful. Short ad* dresses were given by Rev. Ginger, Canon Eccles, Rev. Gardner, Mr Stevenson, Captain Botheras and Rev. Rice, the last-named gentleman being from Dr. Barnado's homes in England. He gave a shurt outline of the good work done in these homes and he also stated that Woodville would be probably visited by the Barnado Boys at a later date. The reports referred to the splendid progress which had been made in all the departments of the Church. The Borough Council met last evening, Mr D. G. McKibbon being installed as Mayor for his first term. Mr . Burnetts, the retiring Mayor, spoke in high terms of Mr McKibbin. Eulogistic reference was made to work done by Mr Burnetts during;"his six years of office. The various Committees were elected for the ensuing year, and it was resolved to strike a rate of 3§d in the pound. The Council also resolved to join in with the Oroua County Council in celebrating • the opening of the Lower Gorge bridge, which will take place this month.
