FIXING THE PRICE OF BREAD AND FLOUR.
A TRADES HALL SUGGESTION. Received May 6, 10.50 a.m. MELBOURNE, May 6. A deputation from the Trades Hall tried to get the Government to insert a provision in the Millers' and Bakers' Bill giving the Governor power to Gazette at the beginning of each year the price of flour and bread throughout the year. It was urged by the deputation that the farmers did not receive the benefit of the high prices, but i-t went to those who held stocks and forced prices up. The Premier agreed with the ie pu tation in the abstract, but said that public opinion was not yet ripe and would never sanction the step suggested.
