EDUCATION AND DEFENCE.
We demand imperatively of every parent that bis children shall be educated, and we provide the necessary facilities at great aid increasing expense. Is it unreasonable or oppressive to further demand, says the Auckland "Herald," that before he reaches manhood every lad phnll submit to such training as will enable him to take effective part in the national defence should occasion ever arise? Our entire educational system is "compulsory," nor should we introduce any new principle if we extended it to cover defensive training.
