PERSONAL.

The following resignations have been accepted by the Wellington Education Board:-Mr A. Taloot, second assistant, Carterton: and Miss E. B. Cran, assistant, Martinborough. The death is announced of Mr Robert Stone, a very old resident of the Thames, and said to be the first man in New Zealand to build a steamer and take the first steamer out of Auckland harbour. Mr J. Moncrieff, Town Clerk at Carterton, left yesterday on a visit to New Plymouth, writes our Carterton correspondent. He expects to be absent a week. Mr John Brown, Postmaster, at Carterton, will leave on Monday on a month's holiday, which he purposes spending at the Milford Sounds, Mr W. J. Walsh will act as relieving officer during Mr Brown's absence. Mr A. Talbot, who left yesterday to take up a position on the staff of the Greymouth High School, was presented with a handsome set of gold sleeve links by the scholars, as a token of esteem. Mr A. N. Burns made the presentation, which Mr Talbot suitably acknowledged. On Thursday evening, writes our Carterton correspondent, a welcome social was tendered by the members of the Methodist Church at Dalefield to the Rev. W. G. Maslin, and Mr E. W. Pittendreigh. There was a large attendance, the Rev. W J. Elliott ©residing. Addresses of welcome were delivered by Messrs J. A. Ordishand.C. Jones. A splendid musical programme was provided. Mrs F. Narbey, an old resident et Long Bay and Akaroa, is dead, aged 74 years. She arrived with her parents, Mr and Mrs Magee, in the Duke of Bronte in 1851, and walked from Lyttelton to Banks Peninsula. On arrival at Long Bay the family resolved »-o stop, and began dairying under gieat difficulties. "They persevered, however, and prospered. Mr Magee, father of the deceased, was lost in the bush, which then covered the hills, and was found dead after three weeks' search.
