MAURICEVILLE COUNTY COUNCIL.
The monthly meeting of the Mauriceville County Council was held on Saturday, April 24th. There were present: Crs P. W. H. Kummer, ichairnam), J. E. Perry, 0. Isakson, C. Churchill Jackson, and C. Forsberg. Cr Henry J. Dagg, was, owing to an accident from which he was suffering unable to be present. The Valuer General wrote directing attention to alterations in "Thn Counties Act" affecting the making and levying general rates. The Hon. A. W. Hogg forwarded a letter from the Minister of Railways consenting to road metal lying at the Mangamahoe Station yard for the present. The Masterton Borough Council wrote proposing a Conference of representatives of local bodies to discuss the question of forming theWairarapa into a separate Charitable Aid District. The Masterton County Council invited co-operation in appealing against contributing to the cost of maintaining the Victoria Home for incurables. The Council decided to join with both local bodies in the object they have in view.
Mr Lars Larsen wrote desiring the [ Council to metal the road giving access to section 124, Block XIII., Mangaone, and offering to assist with j carts and horses. It was considered j rather late in the season for such j work, but it was left to Cr Isakson to j decided what could be done. Mr W. Fisher requests the Council j to supply 25 feet of 9in pipes undertaking (o put them in the drain and < thus improve the approach to his j store. The Council was averse to complying with the request. Cr. Isakson gave notice to move at next meeting "that the Mangamahoe Road be closed for timber traffic during May, June, July, August and September, in accordance with the provisions of 'The Public Works Act.' " This step is deemed absolutely necessary owing to the damage which has already been done on the roads—the cost of repairs far exceeding the means at the Council's disposal. The Overseer reported that the sheathing of the bridge over the Makakahi was completed, and the painting of both bridges at Hastwell; the bridge at beyomur's required a day or two to finish. A large culvert which collapsed at Kennedy's Hill Has been replaced. The damage by rain during the month had been slight. The water tables on a section of the Mangamahoe Road are still in a neglected state,after rain the water running down the centre of the road for the greater length of this part of the road. He again drew attention to the ever bad state of the Mt Bruce Road. Accounts amounting to £225 14s 6d were passed for payment.
