PAHIATUA NEWS.
(From Our Resident Reporter)
FOOTBALL NOTES. Thursday. So far only two Junior teams have entered for competition in this district. It is to be hoped that more teams will enter as theie are plenty of young players about, and competition among two teams will not tend to improve either team to a great extent. It is fro.T< the Junior teams that we expect to get our Senior players in the future, and Junior teams should be encouraged.
Pahiatua have a splendid set of tacks to pick from and will probably have the finest back team in the Bush Union, but so far the forward division seems to be w-eak. However, the game against Mangatainoka on Saturday next may perhaps bring out some new blood. The latter team have a splendid lot of forwards. The matter of removing the headquarters of the Union is a question that is to be considered at the meeting of the Bush Union on May Bth, and one that should receive proper consideration from the various delegates. A motion will come before the meeting to remove the headquarters to Pahiatua, and it/; is to be nopsd it will be carried. The following is the result of the election for the Borough Council : Walter Norrell, 301; J. W. Sturton, 275; W. W. McCardle, 238; T, Boyd, 210; J. B. WestlaKe. 207; G. L. H. Drew, 205; T. P. Hewat, 172; E. B. Hare. 158; D. P. Davidson, 155; F. G. Milne, 155; J. Osburne-Lilly, 154; A. Weston, 145; R W. Ashcroft, 140; .A. Walsh, 129; J. H. Richardson, 112; P. E. Debreceny, 70; E. C. Cox, 65; F. E. Storey, 58. It will be noticed that Messrs D. P. Davidson and F. G. Milne tied for the ninth place, and in accordance with the Municipal Corporation Act, the Returning Officer drew lots this morning with the result that Mr Davidson is the ninth Councillor.
The chairman of the promoters of the proposed freezing works informed me to-day that about £5.000 worth of shares had been guaranteed in this district alone, without making a canvass. Some of the largest shareholders are Messrs T. Hodgins, Halliday, T. Quirk, Cooper, Lomax, Girdwood, Brechin and Captain Whyte. There is now no doubt as to the Company being floated, and the support already given has exceeded the expectations of the promoters. It is proposed to make a canvass throughOut the various districts. The social in the Mangatainoka Library Hall in aid of St. Mark's Church, last evening, was a decided success, and a crowded house was recorded. During the evening songs were well rendered by Misses May, Garter and Gardner, and Mr L. BarTell, and Miss Woodham played a pianoforte solo. Good nusic for the dancing was supplied by Messrs E. Sharp (violin) and T. Dray (piano). Supper was kindly provided by the ladies of St. Mark's congregation. Mr .J McTavish was M.C. Messrs Husband and Finch, land agents, report having sold several properties during the past two months.
