THE HEMP MARKET.
The state of the hemp market has been causing anxiety for some lime past to those connected with the industry. At present, says the "Trade Review," there is a slight revival to be noticed, though it is feared that it does not point to any permanent improvement. If is reported that there is a little slackening in the output of Manila, and therefore more activity in other fibres in the London market. The "Trade Review" continue* :—"As, however, all forecasts have pointed to a very heavy output of Manila for the year, we expect that the slackness, if any, will' prove only temporary. There has been in this market an increased inquiry for 'fair' grade, owing to a heavy fall-ing-off in the output of that quality, and a consequent difficulty in carrying out contracts. We hear of some spot sales at £lB 5s (a rise of 15s), and offers of the same price for JulySeptember delivery,, for good fair we hear of a little trade, but quotations generally rule £l9 10s to £l9 15s. There is little inclination of millers to enter into contracts at these rates, as they do not pay, and it is thought there is some prospect of an improvement in the labour conditions before long."
