RACING.

TURF NOTES. (By "Zetland"). The Mauser-Culverin colt recently purchased by Mr J. O'Meara is now being ridden about by W. Garrett. The hall brother to Letherin greatly resembles the latter, wl if he proves as capable a racehorse his owner will doubtless be well satisfied. Lupulite, who some weeks ago W33 reported to have liied from the effects of breaking a blood vessel, won a race at t'ie Riverton meeting the other day. The rumour as to the horse's death gained currency through a slight mishap that occurred while hisjtrainer was giving him a drench. The glaas Lottie was broken in the process, but no serious result followed. Letherin is still going along satisfactorily in his work, although after being galloped he is slightly sore. If he continues sound he will be a contestant at the Wangahui meeting next month.

Preamble, by Merrie England JPrologue, consequently a full brother to Prelude, died last week. A veterinary post mortem showed the cause of death to be an abscess on the brain. The colt, who was one of J. Phillips' team, gave promise of being a galloper of merit, and one worthy of his breeding. As a yearling he was bought from his breeder in Marlborough for 200 guineas, and the loss is therefore a serious one to his owner, while his trainer is deprived of what might have developed inta a high-class performer. The Lower Valley Jockey Club has decided to hold its annual race meeting on Septmeber 30th and October Ist, instead of on December 26th and 27th. The alteration is expected to prove an advantage to the club, inasmuch as it will not now clash with the fixtures of other larger clubs. Satisfactory fields and good racing were witnessed at the Awapuni course yesterday. Hermia proved what a solid performer she is by winning the Karere Welter with lOst 91b. The runner up, Ukraine, is a full sister to All Red and Munjeet. At Trentham last week she did not show up prominently, but from now may be worth watching. Provocation again proved his capability and consistency by winning the Manawatu Stakes in fast time. Flitaway did not run up to expectations in the Telegraph Stakes, and filled third place to Longner and Kareroa. An outsider in Daisy Paul prevailed in the Longburn Handicap, with Roosevelt a creditable second, and Illustrious, who showed good form at Trentham last week, won the Woodhey Hack Handicap.
