SONG RECITAL.
There was a good attendance at the Foresters' Hall, yesterday afternoon, to hear the song recital given. by Mrs H. J. Taplay. Rev. H. Watson, in introducing Mr Taplay, said that she had decided to take up her residence in Masterton. Rev. A. T. Thompson returned: thanks on behalf of Mrs Taplay, maknig a happy littla speech. The first song, entitled "Mattinata," by Tosti, was rendered very effectively and was followed by Gounod's "Ave Maria." the sinking •f which was greatly enhanced by the violin obl'gato played by Mr W. J. Goddard, thfs being undoubtedly the best of Mrs Taplay's items for the afternoon. Bishop's "Should HeUpbraid" was very well received, and was encored, but the legato passages were hardly smooth enough, the pressing from forte to piano being rather too pronounced. For aa. encore she gave "Melisande" Other item 3 were:—Chaminade'& "Captive Love" and M. V. White's "The Sea Hath Its Pearls," the intermezzo from "Cavalleria Rtisticana" (Muscagni), and "There's a Land," all of which were very much appreciated. Miss Eva Hood, A.T.0.L.. the accompanist and solo pianist, for her first item gave Raff's "SpringSong," and for J;he second Chopin's polainise in A Flat. Both these items showed the brilliant technique which the lady possesses, the audi-' ence demanding an encore for the latter item, Miss Hood rendering very daintily and effectively "Bee's Wedding" (Mendelssohn) The violin solo Raff's Cavatina by Mr J. W.'Goddard, was played in an efficient manner, the double stopping passage-s being a special feature of his rendition. Excellent afternoon tea was provided to the visiters by the management of the. "Kia Ora" Tea Rooms.
