LONDON MARKETS.

HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT. The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cable from the High Commissioner, dated 24th April, 1908: The mutton market is depressed. Th 3 supply exceeds the demand, except light weight, which is extremely scarce. The stock is accumulating, and it is reported that there is no room to store more. Prospects are unfavourable, and trade in mutton is very disappointing, there being only a very hand-to-mouth demand. Can terbury, 3d; North Island, 2gd per lb. The lamb market is weak. " Stocks of lamb on hand are heavy, and are widely distributed amongst agents, who are pushing sales. Canterbury, 4|d per lb; North Island, 4d. The beef market is quiet, and there is no change in prices, namely, hinds, 3§d; fores, 2d per lb. The butter market is quiet but steady. There is a better demand for best quality, and a poorer demand for inferior quality. Choicest New Zealand, 100s per cwt; Danish, 108s; Siberian, 98s; Australian, 975; Argentine, 98s. The cheese market is rather quiet; Coloured, 635; white, 61s per cwt. The Papanui shipment of cheese arrived in damaged condition. The hemp market is quiet, bu* holders are firm for New Zealand on account of a small supply. Good tair, on spot, £23 10s per ton; New Zealand, fair grade, on spot, £22 per ton; fair current Manila, £22 per ton; April-June shipments, good fair grade, £23; fair grade, £2l 10s; fair current Manila, £2l 10s per ton. Manila output, 18,000. The wheat market remains firm, but advance is checked. Prices have declined 3d per bushel. There is a brisk demand for oats. Beans are scarce. The market is firm: last week's quotation, old crop f.a.q. per 5041b was 345. Peas. —The market is firm, and prises continue to advance: last week's quotation New Zealand partridge peas pe 504 lb, 465. j The cocksfoot seed market is steady at 80s. with a firm market for all grades.
