MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The orJinary meeting of the Manterton Borough Council wad held last evening. His Worship the Mayor presiding. There were aho present:—Crs Hunter, Elliott, Pauling, Pragnell, Prentice, Haughey. Immediately after the minutes of the last previous meeting had been read, Cr Hunter moved that the Council adjourn until the next ordinary meeting. Cr Haughey spoke in reference to the courteous manner in which his Woi'ship the Mayor had conducted the meeting during the past twelve months. He moved that a hearty vote of thanks be accorded the Mayor. Cr Hunter agreed with the remarks of Cr Haughey. He was sure the Mayor had acted in accordance with the dictates of his conscience, and with no studied intent to deal unfairly with any member of the Council. They certainly had not agreed on many points, but this was not a time in which debatable matter should be introduced into the discussion. He seconded the motion. Cr Pauling expressed the opinion that the work of the past year had been entirely satisfactory from all points, and the good results that had accrued were attributable in no small degree to the close attention given to Borough affairs by his Worship the Mayor, and the tactful manner in which he had conducted its business. He (the speaker) had been one of the Mayor's strongest opponents at the last election, but he had now come to recognise his sterling qualities, and trusted to see him returned again. Crs Prentice and Pragnell spoke in similar terms.
The Mayor in responding said he had to thank the Council for the splendid and almost unanimous support accorded to him during the past twelve months. He had always endeavoured to conduct the business of the Council on an absolutely impartial manner, and without fear or favour. He hoped that the members who had worked so hard during the past year would again be returned. He felt that a word of praise was due to the loyal work done by the staff. In their Town Clerk and Borough Engineer tney had an officer who had proved his ability beyond question, and who conducted everything he undertook with a thoroughness that commanded the appreciation of the Council. Every official in the office had carried out their respective duties admirably, and were entitled to the best thanks of the Council. Mr Mansfield, Town Clerk and Engineer, replied on behalf of the staff, and expressed the hope that the desire as expressed by the Councillors of seeing the Mayor returned for a further term would be realised. The motion to adjourn was then put and carried.
