THE MORTGAGE TAX.
In the interests of the colony everything that can possibly be done to encourage an influx of capital from external sources ought to be done, and if the mortgage tax can be shown to be a serious obstacle it should be done away with. Moreover, it is the duty of Parliament and of the Government to oppose all legislation which may embarrass employment of capital and render it insecure, eays the "Southland Times." Capitalists have undoubtedly been given reason to complain that no particular regard has been shown for their interests in the past, and we shall not succeed in inducing men with money to invest in the development of the land or in commercial enterprises to come to New Zealand unless we satisfy thern not only that thair investments will be reasonably lucrative but also that their interests] will be protected by our legislators.
