PAHIATUA NEWS.
(From Our Resident Reporter). Monday. FOOTBALL NOTES. The members of the Old Boys Club will hold a practice on the Recreation Ground on Wedneday afternoon. The opening match of the Pahiatiia*Club will take place on Saturday next. A scratch game is being arranged betweao Woodville and Pahiatua, and as these teams have not met for a considerable period, the game will no doubt be interesting to watch. The Pahiatua team are rather slow in starting, but as they have several members with good reputations the first match is creating considerable interest. The Mangatainoka team are getting in some good practice, and will be one of the hardest teams in the Bush Union to beat. The action of the Konini Club in taking steps to have the old cricket pitch removed from the football ground is a very commendable one. Konini has not been "able to Loant of a cricket team for the last three years, and the wooden pitch which is in-the centre of the field, has always been a consider bid nukan::! and a source of danger to players. The Konini Ladies' Hockey Club, who use the ground for hockey matches, will also be exceedingly- grateful when the planks are removed from the field of play.

The initial ru.~ in connection with the Woodlands Hunt Club,£ which is to take place over Mr Mexted's property at Mangatainoka, on Wednesday afternoon, is creating considerable enthusiasm, and given a fine day a large number of huntsmen will participate in the sport. Since the inception of the New Zealand Farmers' Union, splendid work has been done for the farming community by the various branches, yet it is unfortunate that at the an-1 nual meeting of the Pahiatua Central Branch on Saturday afternoon, the Secretary reported that 65 members had not paid their yearly subscriptions. This is probably an oversight on the part of the members, and they will no doubt rectify the matter now ■ that tneir attention has been drawn to it. ( A large gathering of Mangatainoka residents assembled on the Domain yesterday afternoon to - hear a numberjfof selections played by the Pahiatua Brass Band under Bandmaster Trezise. The Mangatainoka people defrayed the expenses of the drag which conveyed the bandsmen to the ground. The Woodville Foresters are holding a ball at Woodville on Wednesday evening. i The Kotoroa Ladies' Hockey Club will open the season with a scratch game on Wednesday afternoon on the ground opposite the Pahiatua Hospital. Although Pahiatua boasts of between twelve and fifteen humfred inhabitants in the Borough, there are only 571 names on the municipal roll.
