MASTERTON DRAINAGE OUTFALL

THE IMPROVED SYSTEM. A representative of the Wairarapa Age yesterday paid a visit to the Masterton Borough drainage outfail. The most noticeable feature that impresses the visitor is the almost entire absence of unpleasant odour at the tank and its entire absence on any other part of the farm. As anticipated the filtration of the effluent through the series of natural channels constructed on the land, is proving highly successful, no difficulty being experienced in passingit thrpugh the soil. The process hag been so arranged that every one of the 80 odd channels, taken in rotation four at a time, receives tank effluent for 24 consecutive hours, thus the period required to use the whole of the 80 channels., is three weeks. Yesterday saw the conclusion of the first three weeks' working, and the result is eminently satisfactory, and the four trenches used three weeks ago will now again be brought into use. A trench has been constructed along one side, and at the extreme end of the farm to catch the effluent and from \ this trench it will pass by means*of .a pipe into the river. It is from this outfall pipe from the trench that : samples will be taken [of the purified' liquid; that being the only point from which it is possible for the effluent to find its way into the nVer.- The result of the first analysis will be awaited with interest, more particularly by the farmers who reside £below and around the farm, as it was the character of the effluent formerly sent into, the river which occasioned them so much alarm and led to the intervention of the Health' Department.
