Lambs—Canterbury light, 4£d; medium, 4,jd; heavy, 4Jd; rest unchanged. Beef, fores, 25-16 d; hinds, 3 3-16 d; rest unchanged. Rabbits almost unsaleable. Smith field quotations—Bestj. large Melbourne, 13s to 14s. Hemp steady. April-June delivery, £23 10s. The quantity of wheat and flour afloat for the United Kingdom is 3,310,000 quarters, and for the Continent 2,080,000. Atlantic shipments 95,000 quarters.
HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT. The Department of Industries and Commerce hag received the following cable from the High Commissioner, dated London April 17th, 1900 : The mutton market is quiet, but there is a better demand on account of low prices. Canterbury light weight scare© at 3£d per lb. Heavy weight plentiful at 2id. North Island light weight 2§d, heavy weights, 2£d per lb. The lamb market is steady and fair business doing. The stocks of lamb on hand are heavy; 65,463 lambs arrived during the week from Argentine, and are selling at 3|d per lb; Canterbury lamb, 4|d per Jb; other than Canterbury, 4£d per lb. The beef market is weak, and inactive. Hind?, 3|d per lb, fores 2Jd per lb. There is a bettsr- demand for butter. The market is steady and. holders are firm. Prospects are uncertain. Choicest New Zealand butter 100s, Danish 108s, Argentine 98s, Siberian 98s, Australian 97s per cwt. The cheese market is steady, but without animation; white 60s 6d, coloured 63s per cwt. The hemp market is very quiet. Transactions are moderate. Geo I fair grade on spot, £23 ss; fair grade on spot, £22; fair current Manila on spot, £22. April-June shipments—Good fair grade, £23; fair grade, £2l 10s; fair current, Manila, £2l 10s. Manila output 20,000 bales. There is a better demand for cocksfoot. There ar light stocks on hand. Bright clean 171b seer 1 , 82s. The wool market remains firm. Bradford tops are quoted as follows: — s. d. 36's low crossbreds , 0 11£ 40's low crossbreds ~ 1 0£ 44/s medium crossbreds Is ljd 50's halfbreds 1 5J 56's quarterbreds 1 8£ 60's Merino 2 1 The gum market is quiet, and small business doing. Ordinary to fair threequarter scraped, 1655; fair half scraped, 102s 6d; brown fair half to threequarter scraped, 87s 6d; brown pickings, common to good, 50s; bush, fair to good, pale and amber scraped, 140s. Stock on hand 434 tons, The hop market is dull, and likely to continue so. The grain market is firm, with an upward tendency. Wheat market ib strong, and all stocks advancing. Market greatly affected by reports of American speculation and srtiall supplies coming forward from Continent. New Zealand long berried wheat, on spot, ex granary, per quarter of 4961bs 455. No supply on hand; and' prices are nominal. The oat market remains firm and prospects are favourable. New Zealand oats, short' sparrowbills, ex granary, on spot,per quarter, of 3841b5, 265; New Zealand oats, Danish, ex granary, on spot, per quarter of 3201b5, 21s. There is a general and active demand for beans. New Zealand beans, f.a.q., old crop, per 5041b5, 345. Peas, marked firm. New Zealand partridge, peas, per 5041b5, 465.
