MASTERTON AND WELLINGTON WEIGHBRIDGES.

THE DISCREPANCIES RECTIFIED. The discrepancy in the weights registered by the two weigh bridges at Masterton ani Wellington has been the subject of numerous complaints of late. Business men and others interested will be pleased to learn that through the representations of the Masterton Chamber of Commerce the matter has now been rectified. It will be remembered that at the meeting of the Chamber last month it was resolved to draw the Department's attention to tl e discrepancyjinthe weiph" ridges | This was done, and at the meeting j of the Chamber yesterday a letter I was read from the Snationmaster, I Masterton, expressing thanks for j having drawn attention to a matter i which theJDepartment recognised as important and needing piompt atten- ] tion. Some t*n days ago it had come under the Department's notice that there was a considerable difference in weighing at Wellington and Masterton, and the matter was at once taken up with the Wellington office. Experts had at the time oI writing (March 23rd) completed a thorough overhaul and test of «.he Masterton bridge—a* waggon had been weighed, and was being sent that day to Wellington for re-weighing. A further letter, dated April 15th, was received from the Stationmsster in reference to the matter, and enclosed were the weighings of the waggon previously referred to. The result showed the Masterton weighing to be five tons 2cwts. and 2qrs, and the Wellington weighing 5 tons Ocwts. and 2qrs. The Wellington bridge was afterwards generally overhauled and tested by another waggon from Masterton a few days later, when both weighings agreed exactly, tn conclusion, the Stationmaster said that the Masterton bridge was examined daily, and \ now that it had had a fair amount of use, should be over its "stiffness" and accurate in the future. It was resolved to send a letter to the Department thanking *hem for their prompt attention to the matter.
