FERRY BOAT DESTROYED.
BURNT TO WATER'S ED GE. By Telegraph—Press Association. DUNEDIN, April 15. The ferry boat Matariki, recently built at Auckland, was burnt alongside the Portobello wharf.
Everything on board the boat was all right when the man who slept on board turned in at ten o'clock. He was awakened three hours later, and found the vessel on fire. Attempts were made to drag the blazing vessel into deep water, and sink her, but the water was too shallow, and she was burnt to the water's edge. The Matariki cost £5,000, and was insured for £3,000 in the New Zealand office, which is reinsured in two other offices.
