PAHIATUA NEWS.
(From Our Resident Reporter). Wednesday. WEDDINGS. At St. Peter's Church, this morning, Miss Laura M. Wakeman, second daughter of Mr W. Wakeman (one of the six pioneer settlers of this town), was married to Mr William Jeffery, third son of Mr G. Jeffery, of Lawrence, South Island. The bride was charmingly attired in a dress of cream silk merveilleux, made in Empire style and trimmed with silk lace, a»xl wore the -orthodox veil and carried a lovely shower bouquet. She was attended as bridesmaids by Miss Sylvia Wakeman in pale green slik voile, and Miss Jeffery in pink silk voile, both these ladies wearing black picture hats, and little Miss Molly Crewe in white chiffon taffeta, carrying a basket of flowers. Mr A. Thomson, of Gore, acted as best man, and the-Rev. Isaacson performed the ceremony. The Church was brightly decorated for the occasion, and the service was a fully choral one. After the ceremony the bridal party and guests were driven to the residence of the bride's parents, and about 150 guests sat .down to a sumptuous wedding breakfast in a large marquee on <ha lawn, the usual toasts being honoured. Mr and Mrs Jeffries left by the express for Napier, where honeymoon is to be spent. Their future home will be at Kaipoi, South Island. The Wesleyan Church, at Mangatainoka. was the scene of a very pretty wedding this morning, the contracting parties being Miss Rubina (Ruby) Polglase, the only daughter of IV r J. Polglase, of Mangatainoka, and Mr Joshua Mathers, second son of Mr W. H. Mathers, of Woodville. The bride, who wag given away by her brother, looked charming in an ivory chiffon taffeta dress made in Empire st;,le, and trimmed with silk fringe and tucked chiffon, and wore the usual veil and orange blossoms, and carried a shower bouquet. Misses K. Drummond E. Herrick and E. Polglase, who were prettily attired in cream, a ttd as bridesmaids, Mr G. Mathers being best man and Mr H. Polglase groomsman. After the ceremony, which was performed by the Rev. Mr Ginger, of Woodville, about fifty guests adjourned to the Library Hall, where the wedding breakfast was laid out in first class style. Mr and Mr 3 Mathers, mid showers of rice and good w'shes, left by the express for • a honeymmoon tour to Christcburcb. A social in honour of the occasion is being held in the hail this evening. GENERAL NEWS. The first run in connection wi'h the Woodlands Hunt Club will be. held on Wednesday next, over Mr T. Mexted's property at Mangatainoka. Several members of the Hunt Club intend journeying to Masterton to take part in, the first run of the season on Thursday next. Mr Dennis McGrath, who has been an inmate of the Pahiatua Hospital since Christmas owing to injuries received throuerh an accident, was able to leave that institution yesterday. Nurse Snodgrass has resigned her position as nurse at the Pahiatua Hospital. The dance at Scarborough, which was postponed on Easter Monday evening, will be held this Thursday evening. No less than six business people have notified their intention of standinig as Borough Councillors, and I believe all the present Councillors will again be nominated. It is to be hoped that these gentlemen will all take the platform and give their views on local politics. Pahiatua is gradually pushing ahead, and we want an active and goahead Borough Council to further the interests of this town. A close contest is anticipated. MAKURI NOTES. A very pleasant bachelors ball was held in the MakurLHall last evening. The bachelors bad spent considerable time in preparing the floor, which was in perfect order. Visitors were present from all the surrounding districts. Excellent music was supplied by Bluett's string band, and the piano was kindly lent for the occasion by Miss Wilson. A word of praise ig due to the bachelors, and
also the energetic secretary, Mr C. E. Madden, for the splendid manner in which all arrangements were carried out.
