THE HEMP INDUSTRY.

The total quantity of hemp exported from New Zealand for the year ended 31st March shows a decrease of 56,508 bales, or, roughly, 11,300 tons, which at £2O a ton figures out at a loss to the country of £226,000. The quantity graded for export for 1908 was 132,535 bales, and for 1909 only 76,027. There was graded lor the month of bales, and for the corresponding month of 1908, 11,979 bales. "Fine" and "good fair" hemp show an increase for the month, and the chief fibre expert reports that the quality was excellent, not one bale of "fine" or "superior" being rejected or condemned.
