RACING.

WAIRARAPA RACING CLUB. I AUTUMN MEETING. I SECOND DAY. Fine weather ruled yesterday, and the course was in good order considering the heavy rain that fell on Sunday. The attendance of the public was large and representative, and investments were brisk, the sum of £6,406 being put through totalisator. Good business was again done by the bookmakers, both inside aiid outside. The arrangements in connection with the meeting were again very satisfactory. Racing commenced with the Hack Hurdles, only Lebeccio and Straban going out for the rice. The former was in front nearly all the way, and won by three lengths. The rider, S. Crawford, was cheered when he returned to weigh in.

Advantage was the popular selection for the Rototawai Handicap. Andrew Mack cut out the running to the straight entrance, but when heads were turned for home Advantage came away and scored comfortably by nearly two lengths. A field of nine were saddled up for the Moroa Hack. The best backed pair, Te Ru and Miss Vera, finished first and second, the first-named getting to the front early and winning easily.

Lady Paul was made a hot favourite for the Tauherenikau Shorts. She led for nearly four furlongs, but fell back entering the straight where Projectile and Waiata came through, the former winning by half a length. Lady Paul finished last. Aberration was the only defection from the Aucumn Handicap, leaving eight to go to the post There was considerable delay at /the post, but eventually Silken Rein got a good break on the field. She remained in front to the home turn, where Merrie Rosa and Gaelic joined issue. An exciting run down to the winning post resulted in Merrie Kose scoring by a length, and returning her supporters a good dividend. The favourite, Effort, did not race up to expectations, and Maiora, who got the worst of the despatch, was not very prominent in the race. In the Juvenile Handicap Sea Queen raced to the front, and led to the straight. Aema and Iney then came through and well ridden by Kirk the latter scored by nearly a length from Aema. Rock Ferry was made a warm favourite for ihe Stewards' Handicap, and after running behind his field for lour furlongs, came through and won by half a length from Aboriginal, who registered a good gallop, aDd is improving. Eleven lined up to the barrier for the Waiobine Hack, of half a mile. Andrew Mack and Purakau were the popular selection. Nominatjons for all events to be run at the Marlborough Racing Club's Autumn race meeting on sth and 6th May next, will close with the secretary, Mr C. J. W. Griffiths, Blenheim, on Saturday, April 17th.

A disgraceful scene occurred at the end of the last race of the Auckland Racing Club's Easter meeting on Saturday. A young man named Victor Wood had laid a "double" of 50 to 1 with a bookmaker styling himself "Jim Mason." When Dogger Bank won the last race Wood's hope 3 were realised, and he went along to Mason to ciaim his winnings, £25 10s. It is alleged that Mason passed a wad of notes to a confederate, and turned round to Woud and other successful backers, with a story that "cash had run out," but that money would be obtained from the bank, and al! made right next day. A fury t?3ized tho crowd, and things would have gone badly with Mason, his clerk, and the alleged confederate if the police had not stepped in and taken a hand. The men were taken > to the stewards' stand, but as most of the stewards had departed an inquiry was postponed till Monday. The crowd then took a hand again, and things looked very bad for the two. With many imprecations Mason and Walsh were seized by the throats, by the hair, by the collar —in fact any place that could be gripped. For the time all was riot, and pandemonium reigned supreme. Eventually the man paid straight out odds, and the police got him away. Another bookmaker (Robt. Hunter), Who was earlier in the day failed to make good his wagers, was with his clerk, brought before the stewards, who after hearim? the evidence of the police, of Hunter, and of Robinson, ordered Hunters' immediate remoal from the course, and recommended that no license be issued to him in future, and that he be warned off all racecourses in New Zealand.
