CARTERTON NEWS.
(From Our Resident Reporter.) Saturday. Only a very small percentage of the members of the Carterton Rifle Volunteers are taking part in the Easter manouevres at Oringi. it is chiefly due to the fact that many of the men are unable to .obtain the necessary leave, as business here was carried on as usual to-day. The town presented a very busy appearance this evening, no doubt due to an influx of visitors who are here spending their Easter|holidays with friends. The -Rev. L. Thompson, of St. Andrew's Church.and Mrs Thompson, were thrown out of their:trap yesterday afternoon, when returning from Masterton. They were just neanng the Taratahi Hotel, when a motor car passed the in, and the horse took fright. It swerved in towards the hotel verandah, carrying away two posts, and capsizing the vehicle. Both the occupants were thrown violently to the ground, Mr Thompson having his face severely bruised, and his shoulder considerably hurt. Beyond a few scratches and shock. Mrs Thompson escaped injury. Mr and Mrs Thompson were conveyed to their home in the motor car, and attended by Dr Johnston. A valuable drauhgt mare, belonging to Messrs W. Booth and Co., was severely injured on Thursday. The animal was attached to a truck loaded with log's, ana when coming down an incline the mare slipped, a nind leg going under the front of the truck, and being broken. A game of hockey, between the Carterton and Wellington Metropolitan Clubs, is to be played here on Monday. The following will represent Carterton: —Ellis, L. Dudson, R. Reid, Fisher (3), Petersen, brown, Tunnicliffe, Morgan, and G. Sievers. ■' Sunday. This afternoon, the Petone Football Club's team, which arrived here yesterday to play a match with the Rovers to-morrow, was taken for a drive in Messrs Shaw and Cole's drag through the South Wairarapa. Although the weather was wet and miserable, the team thoroughly enjoyed the outing.
The services in the Methodist Church to-day were of a special nature, in accordance with Eastertide. The morning service was conducted by the Rev. R. W. Poole, and in the evening the Rev. W. J. Elliott occupied the pulpit. St. Mark's Church was gaily decorated in honour of Easter Sunday, and the services were well attended. The choir, who have been practising tor some time, rendered the hymns very effectively, and the services were conducted by the Rev. R. Young, vicar of the parish.
