AN EXPLANATION.

(To the Editor).

Sir, —I am writing this to explain our reasons for not closing our premises on Saturday, 10th inst. 1. After carefully considering the matter, I came to the conclusion that to keep our premises closed for four consecutive days would entail very great inconvenience to our customers, as it would debar them from bringing in their produce (some of it of a perishable nature), and of obtaining necessary supplies on their market day. 2. Our business consists of seven branches, with some two hundred employees, all conducted undergone system, and ur.der the same rules. Consequently, we could not well close one of the premises and give a holiday to the employees of that business, without closing all the others in the townships where all the other business places will be open on Saturday. 3. If we were weak enough to be coerced into closing we would be the greatest losers, out of all proportion to any of the signatories who have stated their intention to close their premises on Saturday. As sev-' eral of them are wholesale firms who usually close at noon on Saturdays. Others are manufacturers who are governed by trade awards' and only pay their htinds by time for actual work done, while the bulk of the others employ very few hands, some hardly any. 4. In conclusion, I have to add that we have the well deserved reputation ot being liberal, generous and just employers. We have a loyal staff, who do not desire to have holidays, which are detrimental to the welfare of their employers, and of inconvenience to their customers.—l am, etc., M. CASELBERG, Managing Director W.F.C.A., Ltd,'
