TURF NOTES.

(By "Zetland.") The Tauherenikau course is in exceptionally fine condition for the meeting which opens to-day. Yesterday morning a large number of horses were worked on the outside of the course proper, and many of the gallops were decidedly interesting to witness. A. Peters was the first trainer out, and he sent Colossus and Mildura six furlongs. Both moved rather sluggishly at the commencement, but rattled home at a good pace. Hilarina ran once round at a sound working pace, and Advantage put in a fast half-mile. The Advance mare is very well. Miss Vera and Mussell went out together for a half-mile flutter, but the former hopped out first by several lengths, and h Id her advantage to the finish. Other.: that executed smart sprints from the halE-mile post were Sea Queen, Royalty, Aixte, Stepalong, Kelso, Rock Ferry, Purakau, Leahora and Subdue. Effort, Happy New Year, Swallow and Sealer, were each sent six furlongs, and galloped very freely. Merrie Rose and Lucretius were associated in a gallop of half a mile. They finished together, and registered good time. Knight Commander was a little better than Merrivonia over six furlongs. Silken Rein ran six furlongs on the plough in good style, and Maiora was sent a mile, brushing home fast. Slow work wias allotted Grand Myrella, Kiltie Lass, Daisy Paul, Killaloe and Clem, while Gaelic, Aboriingal and Andrew Mack were each sprinted about three furlongs. Projectile finished better than Castiglione over five furlongs. Iney was out, but only did walking exercise. Judging by yesterday's gallops the fittest candidates are Merrie Rose, Lucretius, Advantage, Effort, Axie, Sealer, Maiora, Aboriginal, Rock Ferry, Kelso and Silken Rein. Several horses that arrived duiing the morning were worked in the afternoon.
