A quiet but pretty wedding was celebrated this afternoon, at St. Peter's Church, when Miss Elizabeth Howard, daughter of Mr W. Howard, of "Deepdene," Kaitawa, was married to Mr Henry Hayward. The bride, who was given away by her father, was attended by Miss Annie Howard as bridesmaid. Mr R. Griffith acted as best man, and the Rev, Isaacson conducted the marriage ceremony. After the ceremony'a large number of guests sat down to a sumptuous wedding breakfast. The heatlh of the bride and bridergoom was proposed by Mr J. H.- James, of Te Rehunga, and was drunk enthusiastically. Tile toasts of the bridesmaid and the bride's parents were also honoured. In proposing the latter toast, Mr E. Diamond said that Mr Howard was one of the pioneer settlers of the Bush, and had been eighteen years in the back-blocks. He had to cut a track for himself to fake iron in to build his first house, pack horses being used to convey the material to th j s-p r. <<• wa.3 done under great difficulties. The following hours will be observed at the local Post Office during the Easter:—Or. Good Friday there will be no delivery of mails from the counter, and the telephone exchange will be clused all day. The telegraph office will be open from 5 to 5.30 p.m., and all outward mails close at 8 p.m. on Thursday evening. On Easter Monday there will be a counter delivery from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., the telephone exchange wil be open from 8 a.m to 10 a.m., and the telegraph office frcm 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. The riffe months old chiid of Mr Newton Boyd, creamery manager at Kohuuui, who was badl / scalded on Monday last, died at three o'clock Jthis morning. Much sympathy is expressed for Mr and Mr Boyd in their sad bereavem nt. The butcheis and blacksmiths will close their premises on Saturday next. The ordinary meetiug of the Pahiatua Fire Brigade was held in the Brigade Shed, last evening, Captain McAlisterJbeing in the chair. The .members of the Brigade present subascribed 30s towards the fund being raised for the daughters of a Christchurch fireman. Lieut. Wallis, the delegate at the recent Demonstration, in Auckland, presented the Brigade with an enlarged photograph of the delegates, for which he received the ,thanks of the Brigade. Lieut. Wal- . lis spoke of the splendid conduct of . the Pahiatua team that visited Auckland. Before the meeting took place
a wet practise- to testj the efficiency „of the Briagde members was held. The sub-committee appointed at : last night's meeting~to draw up rules and regulations for the Pahiatua A. and P. Association consists of the following :--Messrs W. Tosswill, J. D. Wilson, Capt. Whyte, J. C Cooper, W. H. Hawkins, T. Boyd, Hewitt and C. Evans. The Chairman, Mr Tosswill, stated that the Secretary (Mr Walsh) had obtained over 200 signatures on the Hat to become members. He also stated that the Levin Show was started with a'much smaller number of member's, the expenditure first Show being £284, while the receipts amounted to £290, and he thought a very successful Show could be held in Pahiatua .on similar lines to the Levin Show.
The Rev. S. G. Compton will conduct services at St. Peter's Church on Good Friday at 11 a.m. and 7.30 p.m., and at Konini at 2.30 p.m. On Easter day services will beheld at 8.0 a.m., 11.0 a.m., and 7.0 p.m.; at Konini at 9.30 and 7.30 p.m., and at Ballance at 2.15 p.m. As showing the importance of Pahiatua as a stock centre, it was stated by a gentleman at the A. and P. meeting, last evening, that nearly a quarter of a million sheep went through the books of the three auctioneering firms operating in this district in a twelve month, and he believed thi9' number was in excess of either Palmerston North or Masterton. Mr W. W. McCardle, who has been "dderjtalkinp in the Wairarapa returned last evening, bringing back with hrn some fine heads. Peveral 3ocials will be held in this ditrict on Easter Monday night, the
annual social will take place in the Konini Hall, the Mangatainoka cricketers are having one in the Library Hall, and the residents of Scarborough are also arranging a social.
