TURF NOTES. (By "Zetland"). Osiris and Tumut arrived at Ric; carton on Tuesday, and were worked yesterday morning. A number of visiting horses are being worked at Tauherenikau this week, and judging by the form shown are expected to account for the majority of events at the coming meeting.

H. Hickey, the ■well-known Hawke'a Bay trainer, this week chased from Mr W. Strang, a four-year-old colt by Lethe—Waipuke. The colt is one of the finest looking thoroughbreds that has been bred n the district for some years, an J in capable hands should be heard of about next spring. D. Wilkinson is handling a two-year-old by Merrie England Waituru, at Greytown. The juvenile shows both power and quality. In re-] cent years Wilkinson has been successful in winning races with Waituru, also with the Merrie England horses Tikarawa and Prelude, so it is quite in the order of things that he should succeed in bringing his new charge into winning form in due course.

Mr W. E. Bidwill's Provocation and Consolation are galloping freely on the Kiccarton tracks.

The acceptances received for the Wairarapa meeting, which opens on Saturday, are sufficiently large to ensure at least interesting racing. The trio nominated for the Hack Hurdles have been accepted for, and it is quite on the cards that a good race may result. Seven remain in the Easter Handicap, of one mile and a distance. Maiora, on Masterton form, is sure to be well backed; Effort will probably carry the confidence of Wellington supporters; Merrie Rose may .be detrimentally effected by her recent lameness; Silken Rein ran disappointingly at Nelson; Aberration, Merrivonia and Gaelic are nicely treated in the matter of weight. If the course remains in good condition the winners will not be easy to select, as most of the contestants race well in good going. The Wangaimoana Welter will bring out Kelso, Aboriginal, San Fernando and three others. It will be interesting to note how Kelso, a double winner at Masterton, and San Fernando, Nelson Cup winner, race in this event. Both are in fine racing trim just now. The Nursery will be contested by about seven two-year-old?, including previous winners in Aema and The starters will include Mr C. B. Pharazyn's colt Stepalong by Stepniak—Good Intent, Mr W. D. Watson's colt First Consul and the Greytown bred Royalty, by Knight Errant—Eulalic. A race that will set backers a puzzle is the Makahi Hack, of five furlongs, for which there are sixteen acceptors. Proved smart* performers over the distance are Iney, Waiwareware, Lucretius, Miss, a Vera, Axite, Toanga and Conquer. With an even despatch there should be a decidedly close finish.
