PAHIATUA NEWS.

(From Our Resident Reporter). Tuesday. AGRICULTURAL AND PASTORAL ASSOCIATION. A meeting was held in the Commercial Hotel this evening to discuss the question of forming an Agricultural and Pastoral Association. There was a large attendance, and the whole question was dealt with exhaustively. It was decided on the motion of Mr Richardson, seconded by Captain Whyte, that an Assocation be formed to be called the Pahiatua Agricultural and Pastoral Association. A sub committee was appointed to draft rules and it was decided that the committee submit the same to a meeting to be held in a fortnight. The sito committee, previously appointed, recommended the securing of a site betweeen the town and the railway station. It was resolved to hold a general meeting on May 11th for the purpose of electing officers, and general committee and considering the question of obtaining a site on which to hold the show. BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETIN . The monthly meeting of the Pahiatua borough Council was held last evening, there being present— The Mayor (Mr D. Crewe), and Crs J. D. Wilson, J. W. Sturton, J. - B. Westlake. E. C. Cox, F. G. Milne, Bisdee and J. P. Davidson. The meeting was a very short one, and only routine business was transacted. The Pahiatua Football Club were granted the use of the Recreation Ground on the usual terms. The Band were given permission to practise in the Borough shed, and several requests from residents to have the footpaths in front of their premises attended to, were referred to the Works Committee with power to act. A second-hand dealers' license was granted to Mrs E. Clifford. The nuisance inspector reported -i the town to be in a fairly clean condition. Accounts amounting to £l9B 16s 3d were passed for payment. A deputation from the Pahiatua District High School Committee consisting of Messrs Norrell, Speera and Prosser, waited on the Council and asked the Council if it co"ld see its way clear to extend the water and drainage to the end of Princes street, so as to .enable the Education Beard to connect the School with the water and drainage systems. Mr Norrell, as spokesman for the deputation, stated that the matter was of great public interest, and the water and drainage was mo3t j i essential from a health point of view. (It would be to the benefit of\ every household in the Borough to have the system installed at the school. Mr Speers said the present arrangements were a menace 1 to the health of the children. The Mayor said he recognised it was a very important matter, and no doubt the Council would give it their due consideration. After the deputation had withdrawn, it was decided to refer the matter to the Finance Committee to report on. GENERAL. Owing-to the heavy rain the Mangatainoka river has been very high during the past two or three days. To-day it overflowed its banks, and the Konini flat, was under water. Mr and Mrs Dunning, accompanied , by their son, Mr S. Dunning, left this afternoon for Wellington, en route to England. The annual harvest thanksgiving services in connection with the Salvation Army were held on Sunday and Monday last. Staff-Captain Simms, of Dannevirke, conducted the services, and the barracks were tastefully decorated, and last evening a concert and sale of work was held. The Presbyterian Choir rendered four splendid items, solo parts being taken by Misses M. Dunning and N. Norrell and Messrs Clough and B. Mills, and a glee was sung by the M isses Norrell, Dunning, W. Sayers and Redwood, and Messrs Cooper, Clough, C. and B. Mills. Songs were sung by Capt. Botheras and Messrs Clough and C. and B. Mills. At the conclusion of the programme Staff-Captain Simms .■thanked the Presbyterian Choir for

he great assistance they had rendered to the Army. Mr S. Dunning, of the local staff of Messrs Abrainm and Williams, Ltd., was last evening presented with.a set of military brushes by the local employees of the firm, the presentation being made by Mr W. J. Collins who referred to the splendid manner in which Mr Dunning had always acted for the firm. A surprise was also sprung on this gentleman, when Mr Osburn Lilly, on behalf of his friends, handed h : m a purse of sovereigns and a travelling bag as a mark'of the esteem in which he was held. ' Mr Dunning briefly responded. The health of Mr Dunning and also that of his father and mother were drank enthusiastically. STOCK MARKET. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile held their fortnightly sale at the P.F.A. yards to-day. The unfavourable weather prevented a large number of entries Irom coming forward. There was a small yarding of sheep, and a fair yarding of cattle, prices being as follows: Sheep: Two and four-tooth wetlters 9s, two-tooth wethers 9s, woolly lambs Bs, other lambs 7s, aged to 7s 3d. , Cattle: Two-and-a-half-year steers 58s, 18month steers 38s, fat cows and heifers £3 13s to £3 19a, forward store cows 45s to 595, two-year empty heifes 37s to 40s, store cows 30s to 575, heifers in calf 40s to 60s, weaner calves 7s to 14s 6d. < Messrs Abraham and Williams, Ltd., report on their P.F.A. sale to-day as follows: —The inclement weather prevented many entries from coming forward, and also mitigated against,a large attendance. We quote:—Sheep: Two and, four-tooth wethers 9s Id, cull lambs 2s 6d, I woolly Jambs Bs, f.m. ewes 9s sd, good forward ewes 8s 7d. Cattle: Fat cows £2 19s to £3 7s, store cows £1 7s to £1 12s.
