CARTERTON NEWS.

(From Our Resident Reporter.) Monday.

The pulpit of St. Mark's Church was occupied, last evening, by the Rev. H. T. Stealey, who preached an eloquent sermon on Eastertide, basing it upon the words "Do this in Remembrance of Me," taksn from the communion service.

Mr A. Talbot, assistant master of the District High School, has received a similar appointment in the South Island, and will take up his duties at Greymouth at the beginning of next month. During the time that Mr Talbot has been associated with the local school staff he has proved himself a capable and painstaking teacher, and it will be with feelings of regret that the news of his departure will be received by parents. Yesterday afternoon quarterly progress reports were issued to the parents of children attending St. Mark's Anglican Sunday School. The idea of this system is the parents information concerning the work of their children during th e quarter, and will show the total ; number of marks obtainable, and the number obtaned.

The Daletleld Methodists held their harvest festival on Sunday, the congregation in the afternoon and evening being large. The [service in the afternoon was conducted by the Rev. W. W. Avery, and in the evening by the Rev. W. J. Elliott. Mr G. Gordon had charge of the singing, which was very effective, and Mrs Gordon presided at the organ. The fruit, vegetables, etc., were disposed of by auction this evening.

To-day was the centenary of the birth of the late Bishop Selwyu, one of New Zealand's earliest and bestknown Bishops. The Rev. W. J. Elliott, superintending minister of the South Wairarapa Methodist Circuit was baptised by Bishop Selwyn. A very enjoyable euchre party was held in the Parkvale Hall on Friday evening last, in aid of the piano fund. Prizes were awarded to the highest and the lowest scorer, the winning ladies being Mrs Phelps and Miss Oates, respectively, and in gentlemen Messrs G. Eaton and L. Nix. The arrangements of the tourney were carried out by Messrs Brown and F. Wagstaffe. About £2O has now been raised towards the fund;,: The general committees of the Wairarapa and East Coast P. and A. Society, and the South Wairarapa Poultry Association will meet on Thursday next. The former will meet in the morning, and the latter in the afternoon.
