CARTERTON NEWS.
(From Our Resident Reporter.) Saturday. ' An immigrant—a young man—who only arrived in New Zealand a month ago, has already found out that employment here is not so plentiful as what he was led helieve before he left his native land. He arrived in Carterton yesterday in search of work, after having searched for work in Wellington, Auckland, Napier, and along the line to Carterton, without success. His trade was that of a potter, but he was also a carpenter. He expressed himself as thoroughly disappointed at the prospects, and intended, when writing Home, to send some correspondence to the English newspapers, pointing out the state of the labour market n this Dominion. P So far some sixty lactones have been registered in Carterton. Of all the Wairarapa townships, Carterton is the only one in which no ; dog tax is collected. Consequently I the town is swarmed with useless ~canines, who are frequently more numerous in High Street than people. It is certainly about time the Borough -Council awoke to the position, and enforced registration fees. The football club at Dalefield opened the season with a practice this afternoon. The local branch of the Salvation Army is holding a coffee supper and sale of gifts on Monday evening, as a wind up of their Harvest Festival, which is being conducted by Ensign Wellington.
