MASTERTON RACING CLUB.
AUTUMN MEETING.
i The autumn meeting opened yesterday in fine weather, but heavy showers set in about two o'clock. Up to this time the course which had been slightly holding, became rather heavy, but notwithstanding this good times were registered throughout. The attendance of the public was satisfactory, and speculation on the whole was fairly brisk. Nine bookmakers plied their calling, and competed strongly with the totalisator, the amount put through the machine being £4,424, £550 more than on the first day last year. The management of the meeting was up to the Club's usual standard, but the last four races were not started up to time, and the last event was run about three-quarters of an hour stated time. The general arrangements in connection with the meeting were well attended to by the Secretary, Mr A. Hathaway, who with the assistance of the office staff aad officials carried out the various duties most commendably. The work of the starter, Mr A. C. McDonell was on the whole of a satisfactory character, the despatches in the Cup, Bracelet andjWelter being exceptionally even. The luncheon room arrangements were in the hands of Mr H. M. Clark, who gave general satisfaction to the public, and thus proved capable of carrying through with credit what has often proved to be a difficult task. The services of a band to provide music are apparently not now required, and the "Roar of the Ring" filled this part of the programme. The racing, which was decidedly interesting throughout, opened with the Hack Hurdles. Waimaria essayed to win all the way; but at the top of the straight, Whatakura, capably ridden by T. Pritchard, came away and won easily. For the March Handicap, six furlong*, Sunbonnet was made a slightly better favourite than Kelso, who was receiving no less than 31 lbs in weight from the Seaton Delaval mare. Kelso was in front from the rise of the barrier, and won comfortably from Waikaraka, Toanga was made a firm favourite for the Maiden.Hack. Well ridden by C. Jenkins he Jhad very little difficulty in winning from Pikiho, Te Utuatu and eight others. Mildura and Sealer were spiritedly backed for the Masterton Hack Handicap. Diplomatic was first out ivm the barirer, and was never caught. Waiware ware joined issue in the straight, and fighting out a good finish was only defeated by a head. The favourites finished well back. Then came the Waipipi Cup for decision. The ground being heavy after a downpour of rain] backers found difficulty in selecting a probable winner, consequently five of the six starters were evenly supported. The bottom weight, Iney, cut out the running from Merrie Rose, witb Osiris lying third. On reaching the home turn Merrie Rose came away and holding her position romped home a winner by three lengths. Moloch put in a determined finish, and ran third. The win of Mr Piatt's mare was very popular, it being recognised that she had been running with a full [share of bad luck, during the resent season. Her trainer, R. Knox, had the Merrie England mare in fine racing form, and was warmly congratulated on the victory. The Ladies' Bracelet, which brought out the full field of seven starters was fought out by Aotea and Nadyrie, victory going to the former. Sealer was started in this race, and again disappointed his party. A field of ten lined out to contest the Dash Hack. Conquestina, The Swallow and Andrew Mack were the public fancies, but had to go under to Royal Maid, who again proved to be well suited to the heavy going. Kelso was looked upon as a certainty for the Opaki Welter. Kurawaka cut out the running, but at the finish Kelso scored very comfortably from Kurawaka and Aberration.
The successful trainers during the day were C. Pritchard and W. Galbraith, two wins; T. Wilson, J. Gravestock, W. C. Vincent and R. Knox, one each. The winning .riders were F. Cress, three wins; C. Jenkins, T. Pritchard, Stan. Reid* L. Wilson, and °Mr L. McDonald, one win each. During the afternoon an inquiry was held into the running of Waikaraka in the March Handicap. At the Opaki course this afternoon Aberration will be submitted for sale by public auction ! after the principal event in which he will be a contestant. Whatakura, who won yesterday's Hurdle Race in racehorse style will also be submitted for sale. The acceptances for to-day's racing are sufficiently large to ensure interesting contests. With the track in better order there will naturally be a different state of affairs as regards the running of some of the contestants, and this will create a keenness on the part of backers in the endeavour to sort out the most likely candidates. Diplomatic, who returned his few supporters a big dividend yesterday, was not much fancied by his party on account of the course being heavy. The' Diplomat gelding was really, well handled by Stanley Reid, and just managed to squeeze home from the consistant Waiwareware. It is understood that Mr Alien Donald, of Featherston, has received a good offer for Kelso. The Petroleum gelding is in rare form just now and! won his two races yesterday in very decided style. In winning the Waipipi Cup yesterday Merrie Rose ran one of her best races uptodate. The Merriej England's as a rule improve with age, and the mare may prove capable of winning other important events. Mr L. McDonald, who rode Aotca to victory in the Ladies' Bracelet Handicap yesterday, wasjjthe recipient of a gold-mounted whip, donated by Mrs C. F. Vallance. Mr McDonald! rode a fine race, and his finish was up to professional form. Sealer ran very unkindly yeßier* day, and consequently did not show his best form. In firmer going The Workman gelding will race to better advantage. First Consul, by Conqueror—Lady Principal, made his ' w first appearance under colours in the Maiden Hack yesterday. He was slow to move, but was galloping on well at the finish* and shows promise of racing worthy of his breeding later on. Whatakura, the winner of the Hurdle Race, at Opaki, yesterday, will be offered for sale prior to starting in the Hurdle Race to-day.
