The Rifle Club's annual social on Friday evening last in the Pongaroa Hall was a decided success, and was attended by a large'number of people from the neighbouring districts. Re- : freshments were supplied by the J wives and lady friends of the mem- j , bers of the Club, and done full ] justice to. Excellent music was supplied by the Pongaroa Orchestra, | and Mr A. Dickens made a capital M.C. ! The annual meeting of the Rakanui Football Club was held at Mr Coe's store, Mr Newcombe being in the chair. The balance-sheet showed the Club to be in a satisfactory financial I position. Mr G. West was elected Captain, Mr Colin McKenzie Vice-1\ Captaiin, Messrs Newcombe and Mc- j Kenzie delegates to the Puketoi Union, and Mr W. H. Coe was unanimously re-elected Secretary and Treasurer. The "Huia" bridge, which is about half a mile from the township, is now ready for the opening ceremony, which in all probability will be performed to-day, during the tour of the Hon. A. W. Hogg, Minister of P.oads and Bridges. The contractor, Mr W. R. Robertson, has carried out the work in excellent style, and the bridge will be of great benefit to many settlers about here. ihe Foresters' Picnic will be held on the Domain on Easter Monday, and the social and dance in the Town Hall -in the evening. Arrangements are also being made for a football match to take place on the Domain on the same afternoon as an opening match between Rakanui and Pongaroa. On Saturday next a football match between Rakanui and Makuri will take place at Makuri. The losing team will entertain the winners at a dinner. Metalling contracts about here are very brisk, and if the weather continues fine the main road between Makuri and this town will be metalled all the way. The Pahiatua County teams are doing good work on the road along the Puketoi range. Two weddings, in which considerable local interest is being taken, are, I believe, to be celebrated early in April.
