BURGLARS IN MASTERTON.
BUSINESS PREMISES RAIDED. It was thought that when Mr J. Scott's jewellery premises in Queen Street were broken into by burglars some time ago, that Masterton would have a rest from the followers of this particular profession. Apparently, however, this was not to be, for already this week two burglaries of rather a serious nature have occurred. On Monday evening the premises of a Chinese fruiterer in Queen Street were broken into, and a cash box containing about £lO in cash removed. The dox was found yesterday morning in a back street of ,the town. The police are making inquiries, but so far have failed to discover the perpetrators.
Again last night burglars were at work with renewed activity. They chose for th Q . scene of their operations the business premises of Messrs J. Graham and Co., Queen Street. The alarm was given by a local resident, who noticed two suspicious looking characters leaving the premises at about 10 o'clock by the bacK entrance. Constable Brown, of the Police Force, was soon on the scene, but the marauders had evidently, in the meantime, taken the opportunity to make good their escape. An examination of the premises revealed the fact that an entrance had been gained by means of a back window. The glass had been cut just above the lock, apparently with a glazier's diamond. The burglars were evidently not after cash, as the safe and till were found to be undisturbed. The stock in the shop, however, had been considerably interfered with, as boot 3 and clothing were jscattered about in all directions.
The constable, in company with Mr Clarence Graham, made a thorough search of the building, and as far as is known nothing of a very valuable nature is missing, the chief loss being some pairs of boots, shirts, and clothing.
