BOROUGH WORKS COMMITTEE.

At the last meeting of the Borough Works Committee the Town Clerk and Borough Engineer reported inter alia as follows :

The recent unsettled weather has considerably hampered my operations upon Queen street, accentuating the trouble I am constantly suffering from in consequence of insufficient tar plant for preparing tarmac material. If it is intended to extend tarmac operations it will be necessary in the future to add to the plant. 1 anticipate with weather conditions favourable to complete Queen street by or before the middle of April. Kuripuni'street is well on towards completion. Makora street extension has been commenced and both works will, I anticipate, be complied about the same time as Queen street. When these works are completed I will report to the Council upon the available balance of the £25,000 Loan, and take its further instructions. Keporting upon your reference in this matter to me I do not consider it practicable to surface drain Po.vnall street by lowering Renall street. If Pownall street is to be formed it should be done by restoring the material previously removed, as I understand to the premises of Messrs Temple, Wyatt, Town send and others, and raise that level above the adjoining owners' ground. Such a proceeding will create severance and the Council should before commencing the work fix the permanent level by resolution. The sum of £l2O was originally set aside for the work, of which £lO7 now remains. That sum I regard as quite inadequate to give any relief to the several residents. I therefore advise the Council to await the completion of the works in Kuripuni street, Makora and Queen streets before settling the question,as what is to be done deuencis mainly upon the available loan funds.
