PAHIATUA NEWS.
(From Our Resident Reporter). Wednesday. The Pahiatua County Council held a short meeting this mornng, there being present—Mr Thos. Hcdgins, chairman,and Cra A. Ross, R. Smith, A. Sarrell, J. D. Piper and H. Coora. The matter of the tenders for the footpath from Pahiatua to the Pahiatua Railway Station was gone into, and the lowest tender, that of Carmcdy and Culioty, of Mssterton, was : ccepted. The price was £lB4 Is sd, and the contract is to be started within seven days and completed in six weeks' time. There were three other tenders. Tha committee of the Scarborough Footpath Social mec last evening, Mr Godfrey Taylor in the chair. A he:-.rfy vote of thanks was passed to the ladies and gentlemen who assisted at the social, Mrs Malcolm receiving special mention. Nearly £l4 was taken at the social, which afier expenses will leave a profit of over £l2. The Pahiatua Hospital will benefit to the extent of over £9 through a coiiecting box at Mr P. E. DeClub Hotel realising £4 6s 6d. which, wu.h the Government subsidy of 24s in the £, wi.i o. ng the air/junt up to the mentioned above. Acase, which lasted the greater part of the afternoon, and part of he. evening at the local Court, yesterday, was of considerable importance to dairy farmers. A man, named Ericksen, sued Rosenheck Bros., for £l2l 10s lOd, which he considered he was entitled to as half share of milk proceeds from thirty cows from the middle of February until the end of the season. The defence was that Ericksen did not attend to his duties properly, and the agreement could be terminated at any time. After hearing considerable evidence, Mr James, S.M., considered the damages claimed excessive, and allowed £4O and costs. Mr Page appeared tor plaintiff, and Mr Osborne-Lilly for defendant.
• r ATHLETIC SPORTS AT HAMUA. The Forty mile Bush Athletic Society had splendid weather for their sport?, which were postponed from St. Patrick's Day. The attendance wai fully double that of last year, which must be very gratifyirg to the committee, who were kept busy all the day, while the secretaries, files irs J. Galvin and F. P. Walkley, carried out their duties in an admirable manner. Tne Pahiatua Brass Band, under Bandmaster Trezise, played selections during the day. Sorr.e close finishes were witnessed in the running events, and a word of praisa is due to the handicappers, Messrs F. Wells and R. Williams. The thanks of the Society are also due to the President, Mr M. Galvin, who kindly lent the ground and the horse paddock. Great interest was taken in the chopping competition. Half-mile—E. Mills 1, Fane 2. One-mile Run—E Mills 1, Payne 2. 120 Yards Hurdles—R. Yule 1, E. Main 2. High Jump—M. Petersen (scr) 1, A. Benge (s ; n) 2. 50 Yards Dash—J. Hawke 1, Cade 2. Stepping the Chain—.J Mabey 1. Milk Suppliers' Race—W. Webb 1. Wrestling lightweight)—Bateman 1, Ryan 2. Undsrhand Chop—Tagg 1, Pitt 2 (s2ven entries). Standing Chop—Pitt 1, Tagg 2. Sack Kace-K. Jtsain 1, P. Gal,vin 2. Youths* Race—P. Galvin 1, S. Fulftrd 2. During the day several races were run for the children. A social is being held in the Hamua Hall this evening to finish up the day's outing. The o'.her evening the Society made a presentation to Mr F. P. Walkley, who for several years past as acted as' secretary to the Society. The presentation took the form of a handsome travelling cjock. Mr Walkley will lefii-e for a trip to England in about a month.
