TARANAKI RACES. By Telegraph—Press Association. NEW PLYMOUTH, March 24. , Glorious weather favoured the first day's racing. Results: — Kawaroa Handicap Hack Hurdles, H mile.—Speciosa 1, Whimper 2, Waimaria 3. Also started—Sweet Alice, Somali, Golden Glow and Taupe Sweet Alice was very refractory, and the field got away without her. Speciosa soon went to the front, and lfd into the straight with Whimper and Waimaria next. Speciosa was never headed, and finished an easy winner by a. length. . Stewards' Handicap, 5 furlongs. —Kareroa 1, St. Maria 2, Mon Ami 3. Also started—Gyrene, Genuine, Waihuku, Te Kahurangi, Langshan, Clonpett. Mon Ami was a hot favourite. Won by two and a half lengths. Time, lmin 2 l-ssec. Pukaka Hack Handicap, 6 furlongs.— Clemora 1, Burton 2, Shannon Lass 3. Also started—Tanekaha, Mulga Bill, Hydraulic, Durability, Quick March, Faida, Trevata. Won by a long neck. 'Taranaki Cup Handicap, l\ miles. —Waitapu 1, Mahuta 2, Belario 3. Also started—Kilmarnock, Tan San, Uhlando, Tiptoe, Sir Artegal, Vasa, Taitoko, Chanteuse, Whetumarama. When the field moved off Vasa, Waitapu and Taitoko were most prominent, Kilmarnock and Chanteuse getting hung up in the tapes. Whetumarama was first into the straight, followed by Mahuta, Vasa and Waitapu. Mahuta and Whetumarama were abreast four furlongs from home, Sir Artegal improving his position along the back. Three fw> longs from the finish Taitoko cams fast, but could not sustain the effort and Waitapu came like a shot from a ' gun, and had hi 3 head in front at the turn into the straight, Mahuta coming on gamely. Waitapu had everything beaten at the distance, and won by over three lengths from Mahuta. Belario was half a length away third. Time, 2min 8 4-ssec. First Welter Handicap, 1 mile.— Perolina 1, Kaniwara 2, Recreation 3. Also started—Taurina. At the halfmilegpost Perolina ranged alongside Kaniwara and got a nose in front before the straight was reached, and coming away at the distance won by a lergth and a-l-alf. Time, lmin 45 2 ssec. Kaitake Hank Handicap, 1 mile.— Astraea 1, Research 2, Coronetted 3. Also started—Mendip. Paul. Rohepotae. Ascraea came into the straight well in advance of Research, and l'isted long enough to score by nearlv two lengths. Coronetted was a length further back. Roheputae was fourth. Time, lmin 44 2-sseC Flying Handicap, 6 furlongs.--Waikaraka 1, Golden Eagle 2, Mon Ami 3. Also started—Moriarty, Lady Menschikoff, Waihuku. The race was completely spoilt by a very bad start. Waikaraka and Golden Eagle shot out, the others straggling off, and Waihuku stayed at the post. Waikaraka sailed into the straight on his own and won by two lengths. Time, lmin 15 l-ssec. Hack Scurry, 5 furlongs.—Clemency 1, Te Whaharoa 2. Whana 3. Also started—Daisy Webb, Cloreen, St. Tarra, Pukenghu, Glen, Golden Loop, Het Volt, Maika, Toanga, Overdraft, Girlook and Lady Park. Won by a short head. Time, lmin 4 l-ssec.
