MR ROOSEVELT'S HUNT.
1 We would have expected that something: approximating to Spartan simplicity would have characterised the arrangements for Mr Roosevelt's East African bier-game hunting expedition, which is to be launched about the end of next month. From pen pictures of the man which have been supplied in such abundance during the oast few years, it is difficult to connect him with anything save the most primitive necessities upon such an undertaking such as tents, guns, and elementary foodstuffs. Instead, however, the ex-President evidently intends to bask softly in the comforting lap of absolute luxury We learn that two waggons were required to convey the ingredients of the prodigious hunting-kit to a London railway station. Nearly one hundred cases of, tinned foods disposed of the idea jthat there is any intention of "shooting for the pot," or of "living on the. country." And everything else appears to have been designed with a similarly observant eye to the pleasant side of the strenuous life. For example, Mr Roosevelt will be able to sit outside his tent beneath a portable verandah, which a native bearer will carry. He will also have a collapsible bathroom, and will perform his ablutions in a folding bath. "Babbling brooks are to be banned. Mr Roosevelt's wardrobe will fold up into an extraordinary small space, and his easy chair will fall together into a neat parcel like a conjuring trick; tables and ordinary chairs will do likewise. His mirrors will fold up. Useful tools are arranged in small cases. Even the hunter's reading lamp will fold up, and canvas water bottles, when not in use, will "collapse," so that they may be carried in the pocket. The whole thing reads 'like a page from the "Arabian Nights," and smacks of the semiregalprogress of some Indian rajah taking his pleasures in an attractive patch of jungle.
