Advantage was taken of the splendid weather last evening to play off the final for the trophy presented by the Rev. 3 Compton for the Men's Handicap Singles, which, after an interesting game, resulted in S. Reeves (rec 10) defeating Ulrich (scr) by 70 to 59. Several Pahiatua players will probably visit Wanganui at Easter to take part in the Wangarui Tennis Tournament. GENERAL. Arthur James Birt, builder, Pahiatua, has filed his petition in bankruptcy. At a cricket match not one hundred miles from Pahiatua, one of .the bowlers having sustained a severe cut on the middle finger, had bound it up neatly with wax end so as, to protect it from further injury. After bowling one man out the captain of th? batting side objected to the bowler having the finger protected, and the man, a thorough sportsman, took off the covering and although he must have suffered a great deal of pain he managed to secure six more wickets for less than that number of runs. Some people are real "sports."
At the monthly meeting of the District High School last evening all the committee were present except Mr Bovd. It was decided to proceed with si;:iie of the work in connection with fencing part of the school ground as soon as possible. Mr W. Sayer's tender for cleaning the school for the ensuing year was accepted. A farmer from Palmerston North states that the country in this district is looking much greener than on the other side of tha ranges, and he considers that the rainfall there last week was not nearly sufficient to provide the grass and root crops with enough moisture. There is every prospect of the Hamua sports meeting to-morrow (Wednesday) being a decided success. Although the usual social was held last week, another social will be held to-morrow evening as a fitting final to the day's outing. Quite a number ot Pahiatua residents intend to drive down to the sports to-mor-row afternoon, and return after the Social.
