PAHIATUA NEWS.
(From Our Resident Reporter). Monday.
Mr A. Gannaway, who last week
pened a pork butcher's shop and fre.-h fish depot, has taken into partnership Mr Kirkby, an erstwhile .resident of Napier..
At the local Court, this morning, before Messrs D. Crewe and J. D. Wilson, J.'sP., an accused for drunk enness was remanded for seven days' medical treatment. On a charge of assault at Makuri a man named Collins was remanded to the Magistrate's Court, to-morrow (Tuesday). The Pahiatua County Council are not losing any time with the Pahia-tuu-S':urborough footpath, and today a start was made with the footbridge at the creek at Yule's bridge. Yesterday afternoon the patients at the Pahiatua Hospital were given a musical treat by the Pahiatua Band, who under Bandmaster Trezise plaved selections on the giounds in front of the Hospital. A large number of residents were present. The foaiid were provided with afternoon tea by the matron, and Mr Godfrey Taylor, one of the Hospital Trustees, on behalf of the Hospital staff and patients, thanked the Band for their kindness in playing. Mr S. Girdwood kindly provii ei a drag to convey the bandsmen and^ their instruments, stands, etc, back to town. This evening the Band will practise In the old "Era" building, and it is probable that this building will be used for band practises in the future.
Country residents who are desirous cf having first quality goods delivered to their door with promptness and despatch, should visit the grocery and ironmongery stores of Messrs J. W. Sturton and Co., who make a speciality in regard to country orders. This rising firm stock only the best lines available, and do not believe in trying to foist on to the public second-class goods st cheap ;rates. A visit of inspection will satisfy the most fastidious. The proposed A. and P. Association is still the subject of much discussion amongst the farmers of this district.
KONINI NOTES. The mlik supply to the Konini (Ballar.ce No. 2) butter factory is keeping up well. About 2,800 gallons of milk [are delivered daily, with an average test of 4.1. The daily output is about 58 boxes of butter, and this amount is well ahead of any previous March.
Thiyear has baen a very good one for dairying in this district, and several farmers anticipats putting in milking machines next season as suitable labour is scarce. The recent rains have caused a wonderfuljjgrowth in the grass and good winter feed is assured.
Mr and Mrs J. Avery and infant child had a narrow escape from a serious accident yesterday morning. They were driving towards Pahiatua in a gig when the horse shied at a pool of water on the roadside and swerved off tha road near a deep drain. Luckily Mr Avery managed to pull the horse straight round, allowing the gig to drop straight into the drain. The occupants received a severe shaking. Although the Konin district is recognised as one of the best dairying districts in the Pahiatua County, reports from Makomako, Mangatainoka, Hamua, Nikau and Kohunui, state that the dairy farmers in these places have been having » good season. The cheese factories at Ballance, Mangatainoka and Man-garamarama-have taken a large quantity of milk from the butter factories, yet the payments from the cutter factories are greater than in any previous year. A noticeable feature all round is the large amount of winter feed Which has been harvested, and also the excellent root cropb. A large area of land has been ploughed, and dairymen are improving their cowsheds, many of them having had new up-to-date sheds built within the last two years. As long as the Home markets return a fair price, the dairying industry in the Bdsft must flourish, and this district will be able to hold its own with any of the older dairying centres in New Zealand.
