PAHIATUA NEWS.
(From Our Resident Reporter). Saturday. NEW ZEALAND FARMERS' UNION. A meeting of the Pahiatua Central Branch of the New Zealand Farmers* Union was held in the Commercial Hotel, this afternoon. Mr Thos. Quirk presided, and thsre was a large attendance of members. It was decided to hold the annual meeting on April 17th, when the report and balance sheet for the year ending March 31st, 1909, will be submitted. The President, Mr Quirk, thanked the members for their attendance at meetings of. the Union during the year, and for the close attention they had given to the business of the Union. He s'ated that he was extremely sorry that owing to pressure of pbulic and private business he wculd not be able to take such an ""-active part in the affairs of the Union in the coming year, as he had done in the past year. Messrs J. C. Cooper, A. McFarlane, unci Captain Whyte, spoke in eulogistic terms of the excellent manner in which the President had carried out his duties. The Chairman was empowered ta call a meeting if necessary in connection with the proposed co-operative freezing works. Messrs Cooper, Quirk and Eilinghnm, will represent the Pahiatua Branch at the meeting of delegates to be held in Masterton on the 24th inst.', in connection with this matter. Mr Frank Whyte, of Pah Valley, Tane, had the misfortune to break ! three of his toes yesterday through a heavy crowbar falling on his foot. L It is stated that there are a large 1 number of noxious weeds growing beA tween Pahiatua and Hamua. Farmers Hfc who have any of these pests on their Hiand should take note that under the HP'Noxious Weeds, Act, 1908," they are liable to prosecution, without notice, if noxious weeds are found in their property in bloom. I understand that the tennis match between the Woodville and Pahiatua Clubs was . postponed owing to the unfavourable weather in the morning. *- ATHLETIC SOCIETY'S SPORTS. Although the Forty-mile Bush Athletic Society's sports at Hamua were postponed on Wednesday last, yet the committee have not lost heart and are working enthusiastically for the success of the meeting which it has been decided to hold on Wednesday next. The Pahiatua Brass Band will be m attendance, and a large number, of Pahiatua residents intend to visit the sports. Splendid entries from the various schools around Woodville and Dannevirue, have been received for the Southern H.B. Annual School Sports, to be held on the Dannevirke Racecourse, on Wednesday next. A feature of the sports will be the spectacular display by the schoul children present. The Woodville School children have been practising assiduously for some time past, and will make an effort to again take back with them the Shield,' presented by Mr Kods, of Napier, which they succeeded in winning last year. Miss Sicely, of the Mangatainoka School teaching staff, is to be entertained this evening prior to her departure to the Hutt. A meeting of the Old Boys Football Club wil] be held at Boyen's Private Hotel, on Monday evening at 7.30.
CKICKET. The Pahiatua team journeyed to Mangatainoka this afternoon,' and were defeated by the local team by 18 runs. The pitch was in excellent order thanks to Messrs May and Williams, who spent considerable time in preparing it. Pearcey, the Mangatainoka bowler, was in good form, and he was simply unplayable, taking 7 wickets for 4 runs. Speers was the most successful Pahiatua bowler, and Hawkins gave a fine performance behind the wickets. The following are the scores: — Mangatainoka. —Crawford 5, Bacon 0, Pearcey 4, BrocKett 4, Williams 7, Davin 2, Grace 5, Clapham 0, Hawke 6, Chacwin 2, May not out 0, byes 3, leg byes 2; total, 40. Pahiatua.—Tipping' 2, Welch 0, Speers 3, R. Griffiths 5, Hawkins 4, Hutton 1, Richardson not out 1, Shaw 0, Jolly 0, R. Hawkins 1, Hall 0, byes 5; total 22. The Mangatainoka team were delighted with their win. As both
teams have now won two matches each the next match should prove very interesting.
