Mr D. J. Beavis.of the Palmerston North telegraphic staff, who is to be anarried to Miss Blick, of Wellington, next week, waa presented with a valuable wedding gift by the staff on Friday.

A long tour is before Professor Macmillan Brown, who left Wellington for London on Friday. After spending a month or so in England he will set out on a tour of Central and South America, returning to New Zealand by way ofSan Francisco and Tahiti. He will pay particular attention to the remains of the people of Central America who vanished before the Spanish- exploiters of that region. Mr Richard Carter, who has been Collector of Customs at Wellington for some time past, is taking over the duties of Secretary of the Customs Department pending the appointment of a successor to Mr W. T. Glasgow, who is retiring on superannuation in a few days time. Mr Carter is the senior collector in the service, and it is regarded as most likely that he will fill the secretaryship until the time also comes for irim to retire on superannuation. Detective J. Cassells, who has been connected with the detective force for nine years, has been transported by the Commissioner of Police to Palmerston North, Detective Quirk, who is at present stationed at Paimeistorj North, being on orders to take Detective Cassell's place at Wellington. During the time he has been connected with the detective branch of the police force Sn Wellingttm. Mr Cassells has done excellent service in keeping the criminal element in check, and in 1907, when three burglars were convicted, was recommended by his Honor, Mr Justice Cooper, for special recognition.
