PAHIATUA NEWS.
(From Our Resident Reporter). _i Wednesday. Pleasure seekers who had made up their minds to visit the sports meetings in this district, were doomed to disappointment this morning, as heavy rains commenced to fall early, and continued until half-past nine. The Hamua sports committee met at nine o'clock, and owing'to the unfavourable weather decided to postpone the sports until Wednesday, March. 24th. The social which in other years follows the sports is being held this evening.
The Pahiatua Brass Band will render a number of selections at the hospital grounds on Sunday next should the weather prove favourable. Mr J. A. Walsh, secretary pro tern of the proposed A.ai.d P. Association, iu formed me this morning that the number who had signed the agreement to become members of the Association was 170 and not 117 as I mentioned in last [night's report. This is indeed better than was anticipated, and augurs well for a good show being held in this district next year.
The fortnightly meeting of the local Fire Brigade wa_> t not ! eld last evening owing to several m.mbers of the brigade not having returned from the Auckland Demonstrtaion. However, the brigadesmen returned today, all looking well and no doubt much benefited by the trip. 1 am given to understand that in the three-men event the Pahiatua trio were in the lead, but were penalised lour seconds, which put them completely out of a place. A splendid programme of vocal ani instrumental items has been arranged for the social in aid of the Scarborough footpath fund to be held on Thursday evening. Owing to the wet weather the Pahiatua bowlers did not travel to Palmerston North to play for the "Dixon Cup." The Pahiatua rink will consist of Messrs Mcßral.iey, J. Hughes, Hawkins and Wakeman, and should the weather prove favourabla the match will be played to-mor-row. Disappointment has been expressed .by several of the Hamua people at the action of the Eketahuna Suciety in deciding to hold sports on St. Patrick's Day, which has, for several years past, been the recognised sports day of the Fortymile Bush Athletic Society. The clashing of the dates was probably an oversight on the part of the Eketahuna Society.- I understand that the Eketahuna sports, which were postponed to-day, will be held on Thursday next. A meeting of the Pahiatua Old Boys Football Club was held on Tuesday night, in the Pahiatua Private Hotel. .The following officers were elected for the ensuing season : Captain, G. Tester; Vice-Captain, A. Eager; Secretary and Treasurer, F. Oldershaw; Committee, E. Norrell, E. Boagey, Captain and Vice Captain and Secretary. It was fdecided that members should go into active training as soon as possible. All those wishing to become members are requested to communicate with the secretary. The subscripton for the season is 2s.
